What Are They Thinking?

Well this was a surprise. According to mlb.com’s Kelly Thesier, the Twins just announced that OF Jason Pridie was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets to make room for Orlando Hudson. Also, in a separate move, they signed OF Jacque Jones (we all remember him, of course) to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

I know that Pridie wasn’t going to be a great option for the major league team, but he would have been adequate since he would have only been a backup. Plus, this leaves only 4 outfielders on the 40-man roster, 3 of which are very below average defensively. Unless Jones amazes the coaching staff in spring training, I doubt he’s the answer for backing up Denard Span in center field. In fact, I see his signing as more of a “What the hell? It’s worth a shot” kind of transaction. He hasn’t hit well since 2007 with the Cubs, but even then his power evaporated that season. If he really is replacing Jason Pridie, I feel like the Twins should have just stuck with the young guy instead of taking a gamble on someone who is 35 and most likely past his prime.

There still is Nick Punto and/or Matt Tolbert to fill what might have been Pridie’s role, or even Michael Cuddyer *shudder* but I would have preferred to see an actual legitimate center fielder on the roster in 2010 as insurance in case Span gets hurt. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see what happens between now and the beginning of the season.
